For Kurdish bishop, ban on 18-year-olds choosing their religion is anti-Christian
Mgr Rabban al Qas criticises Iraq’s Parliament for rejecting an amendment to a controversial law. If a parent converts to Islam, his or her children are automatically Muslim and unable to change religion upon reaching legal age. For the prelate, this constitutes "genocide" in a country that knows neither freedom nor respect. Now he fears it might be extended to Kurdistan.
Poverty and unemployment among northern Christians
Families living in villages in Zakho District are worn out by the lack of work, food and basic services. “We depend entirely on aid from humanitarian organisations and the Church,” some say. Children have a hard time integrating in schools where Kurdish is the language of education.

Chaldean bishop backs Barzani on referendum for Kurdish independence
The Kurdish leader says that the "time has come” for the Kurdish people to decide “their future”. A consultative referendum would express the “will" of the people. Mgr Rabban al-Qas backs a secular basis, open to all faiths, based on shared citizenship and equal rights.

In a meeting with more than 300 young people from his diocese, the Chaldean bishop of Ahmadiya, Monsignor Al-Qas, reflects upon the central role played by Mary in Man’s redemption: “Without Mary it is not possible to know Jesus, the Saviour.” He expresses concern over proselytising by evangelical Churches in Iraq.
