Philippines: one dies, hundreds fall ill after oil spill

The tragedy occurred on 11 August off Guimaras Island. Medical teams were dispatched to help the population.

Manila (AsiaNews/Agencies) – A consistent oil spill has killed one man and caused hundreds of other people to fall ill in the Philippines. The health department has sent several medical teams to Guimaras Island that was stricken by the disaster, to treat 329 people who have complained of health problems. Among the symptoms: skin irritations, respiratory problems, stomach aches and nausea.

The environmental disaster was sparked by the sinking of an oil tanker off Guimaras on August 11. About 10% of its two-million-litre cargo of fuel leaked, affecting 200km of coastline.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque arrived in Iloilo yesterday "to see first hand the conditions of the people" and to look into the case of Rogelio Dalida, a fisherman from Nueva Valencia, who died of a heart attack after inhaling oil fumes.

Nueva Valencia mayor, Diosdado Gonzaga, confirmed the death – that occurred last week – but said more tests were needed to determine if his heart attack was really brought on by the oil spill or by asthma the victim suffered from.

Guimaras residents are currently seeking to limit the environmental damage caused by the spill. The Filipino Coast Guard has appealed for "for chicken feathers and human hair" to soak it up. The tanker, said to be resting on the seabed, has been described as "an ecological time bomb" by environmentalists.

What is the true good of the Church in China
by Card. Joseph Zen Ze-kiunOn the eve of an important meeting in Rome on "Jesus our contemporary," Card. Zen asks all Catholics to help the Church in China (and especially its legitimate bishops) to emerge from ambiguity, to follow Benedict XVI and "rid" themselves of those organisms that are enemies of the faith (see PA, Bureau of Religious Affairs, etc. .), and that control and stifle the faithful. The Chinese Church is on the verge of a schism caused by "bargaining" between the Catholic faith and political power. The subtitle of this article (wanted by the author) is: "In dialogue with the Community of Saint Egidio and Gianni Valente of 30Days".

Msgr. Savio Hon: Freedom for arrested bishops and priests, is also good for China
by Bernardo CervelleraEven if the government does not give answers or to the Holy See, or diplomats, or to friends of the Vatican and China, it is important that "no one forgets about them." The Chinese government's official response when asked is always: "We do not know." "We need to pray first," "but we must also appeal to those who are holding them."
