Manila (AsiaNews) – Over 80,000 representing 75% percent of the countries police officers contributed a day’s wages to build two school buildings in Albay province as well as and to hold feeding programs and medical missions for the region devastated by typhoons last year.

Senior Supt. Balligi Agnanayon Tira, Bicol police director referred that the funds reached over 2.9 million pesos (46,580 euro). The daily wage of one police officer varies from 30 pesos (4.82) to 1200 (19 euros) according to rank and post.

Between September and December 2006 four deadly typhoons hit the Philippine archipelagos leaving over 190 homeless and 1400 dead. The typhoons provoked floods, landslides and mud storms; the winds destroyed over 330 thousand buildings, including schools and hospitals. In the province of Albay alone, UNICEF estimates that 9 out of 10 schools were swept away.
