The other news of the day: Russia’s foreign minister arrives in Myanmar. Iran expels nearly 6,000 Afghan refugees. Crown prince dissolves Kuwait’s parliament. In Odessa petitioners want to replace the statue of Russian Tsarina Catherine II with that of a gay porn actor.

INDIA

Hindu radicals blame Muslims for recent floods in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam, claiming that they declared a “flood jihad” and are thus guilty of environmental disaster. Police arrested some men on suspicion of damaging riverbanks, while Hindu radicals began making false accusations on social media. Floods in May and June killed at least 192 people.

MYANMAR – RUSSIA

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov landed in Myanmar today for talks with the country’s military government. Lavrov said he had arrived in the capital Naypyidaw “for a working visit”. His next stop will be Cambodia for a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers, from which Myanmar was excluded.

AFGHANISTAN – IRAN

While the Taliban continue to demand recognition for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan by the international community, almost 6,000 Afghans fled to Iran last week but at least 5,600 were sent back in violation of international law on the right of asylum. Likewise, 66 Afghan families were expelled from Pakistan in recent weeks.

Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad Al Sabah dissolved Kuwait’s parliament with the election set for two months from now.
