COP26: Glasgow as by Beijing and New Delhi
In Hong Kong, four activists calling for universal suffrage were arrested. Turkey is reportedly negotiating with Russia to give the green light to the expulsion of Kurdish militias from Kobane in Syria.
COP26: GLASGOW SEEN BY BEIJING AND NEW DELHI
After the opening session, the positions of China and India have sparked global debate. The neighbouring superpowers have announced that they will keep their carbon-neutral targets well beyond 2050. How do the local media report these positions? The China Daily highlights Beijing's achievements to date and the need for a multilateral approach expressed by Xi Jinping. In India, while Modi points to 2070 as the target date for ecological transition, an editorial in The Hindu newspaper reminds us that it is time to act.
HONG KONG
Three elderly people in Hong Kong were arrested on charges of "sedition" for displaying a banner calling for universal suffrage. The slogan had been used by the Umbrella Movement in 2014. Activist Tony Chung, who has been in pre-trial detention for over a year, could admit to being guilty of "secession" and "money laundering". Chung is the second person in Hong Kong to be charged under the new security law imposed by Beijing.
NORTH KOREA
China and Russia would like the United Nations to lift sanctions against North Korea. A first attempt was made in 2019. The intention is to "improve the living conditions of the population". USA: "Pyongyang has not complied with Security Council demands on nuclear programmes".
JAPAN
The Liberal Democratic Party, which won the elections on Sunday 31 October, won 261 seats in the House of Representatives, well above the absolute majority, exceeding expectations. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he had "won the confidence of voters" and added that he would draw up a stimulus package by mid-November to support the economy hit by the coronavirus.
MYANMAR
The war between Myanmar's military junta and anti-coup protesters is also online. After banning Facebook in February, the army is carrying out propaganda activities with fake accounts. Activists are fighting a counter-offensive on Twitter. Soldiers try to join online groups of anti-golpe militiamen to follow their movements.
SYRIA
Turkey and Russia are reportedly negotiating an agreement for a military operation in Kobane, in northern Syria on the border with Turkey, to expel Kurdish YPG militias that Ankara considers terrorist groups linked to the PKK.
AFGHANISTAN
The price of chicken and eggs in Afghanistan has skyrocketed due to import restrictions and high transport costs. It is another face of the humanitarian emergency that is becoming more serious as winter begins.
