SYRIA - ISRAEL - GAZA

The United States announced that Israel and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire, following days of bloodshed in the predominantly Druze area of Suwayda, where at least 600 people have been killed. On Wednesday, Israel launched airstrikes on Damascus, hitting government forces in the south as well, its declared goal, protect Syrian Druze. The ceasefire was reportedly welcomed by Turkey, Jordan, and other neighbours. The Syrian presidency announced that it will deploy new forces to stop sectarian clashes in the south. The torrential rains that are falling on South Korea for the fourth consecutive day have prevented nearly 3,000 people from returning to their homes; meanwhile, the death toll has risen to four, with two missing, authorities report. The rains are expected to continue until Monday. A total of over 7,000 people have been evacuated. Indonesian police have dismantled an international baby trafficking ring that allegedly sold at least 25 babies in Singapore since 2023. They made 13 trafficking-related arrests in the Indonesian cities of Pontianak and Tangerang this week, and rescued six newborns before they were trafficked. According to police, the organisation's alleged modus operandi was to target parents or expectant mothers who did not want to raise their children.

AFGHANISTAN – UNITED KINGDOM

Thousands of Afghans whose personal data were leaked, but who were not evacuated to the United Kingdom, will not receive any compensation. The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) also refuses to proactively provide small compensation to those whose lives were put in danger after a data leak in February 2022, in which the names and details of more than 19,000 people with international ties were made public. Many Afghans now say they fear retaliation from the Taliban.

US President Donald Trump claimed that five jets were shot down three months ago during hostilities between India and Pakistan, which were halted by a ceasefire in May. He referred to the military confrontation that followed a terror attack in the Kashmir region during a meeting with Republican lawmakers at the White House. Pakistan had immediately claimed to have shot down five Indian jets, a claim that India denied.

UKRAINE

The Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, approved the appointment of Yulia Svyrydenko as prime minister of Ukraine, the second woman to hold this post since independence, the first in 15 years. She won with a large majority of 262 votes, with more than 200 from Zelensky's "Servant of the People" (SN) party. This marks the beginning of a new political era in the country ahead of possible presidential elections at the end of the war.

ARMENIA – GREECE

The Armenian government has approved a draft agreement with Greece for the protection of cultural heritage, against illegal digs and unauthorised transportation of artefacts, objects, and works of art, as well as for their restitution to their country of origin, through the exchange of information and the collaboration of qualified specialists in the field, in defence of the “treasures of all humanity.”
