We must be prepared to share with those in need.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – For Christians, giving thanks to God for the annual bounty of the earth joins gratitude to the All Mighty for the gift of the Eucharist celebrated with bread and wine—themselves part of this bounty and the result of human labour—as well as the need to share what we have with those in need.

On a windy day threatened by rain, a seemingly fit Pope spoke before a gathering of 10,000 faithful who had come to St Peter's Square for the Angelus prayers. In his remarks, he tied the Eucharist—to which the year is devoted—to today's celebration of Thanksgiving.

"Today in Italy," John Paul II said, "we celebrate giving thanks to God for the bounty of the annual harvests. The main events are taking placing in the city of Genoa, this year's 'European capital of culture'. I happily join the prayers coming from Genoa's Church community and all those working in the farming sector."

"For us Christians," the Pontiff added, "thanksgiving is expressed through the Eucharist. In every Holy Mass, we bless the Lord, God of the universe, presenting him bread and wine, which are part of the 'bounty of the earth and human labour'.

"Christ himself tied the sacrificial oblation to this simple fare. Through Him, believers are called upon to offer their existence and daily labour to God.

"May Mary, Mother of the Divine Providence, teach us," the Pope said, "how to be grateful to the Lord for what nature and human labour produce for our nourishment. May She help us share what we have with those in need."
