South Korea elderly want to work until 73

Today's headlines: Yes vote wins in Tunisian constitutional referendum; in India at least 21 people die from drinking bad liquor; China's population could decrease as early as this year; in Tajikistan the president gives house to the parents of a child, the country's ten millionth citizen.

SOUTH KOREA

68.5% of elderly South Koreans say they want to continue working until the age of 73. This figure emerges from a statistic conducted among the population aged between 55 and 79 and shows an increase compared to previous surveys. 57.1 per cent justify their choice for economic reasons. By 2025, South Korea is expected to become a super-old society, where the proportion of people over 65 will reach 20 per cent of the total population.

TUNISIA

The yes vote won overwhelmingly in the referendum on the Tunisian Constitution that increases the powers of President Kais Saied, but in a poll where only 1.9 million voters compared to 9 million registered went to the polls. An exit poll by Sigma Conseil, a Tunisian polling company, said 92.3% of voters supported the new constitution.

INDIA

At least 21 people died after allegedly drinking bad liquor in Gujarat, where the production, sale and consumption of alcohol is banned. The incident emerged on Monday morning, when some residents of the Rojid village of Barvala taluka in Botad district had to be hospitalised after their health condition started to deteriorate.

CHINA

China's population could start to decline as early as this year. The South China Morning Post made the claim based on public data on newborn screening in the first six months of 2022. Babies born in Henan, the country's third most populous province, decreased by 9.5% in the first six months of 2022 compared to last year, and the same happened in other provinces of the country. 

JAPAN

The home of an executive of the now defunct Tokyo Olympics organising committee was searched in an investigation into bribes he allegedly received from a sponsor of last year's sports event. Haruyuki Takahashi, 78, is accused of receiving about 45 million yen (330,000 euro) from the company Aoki Holdings Inc. 

RUSSIA

The 91-year-old former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbačev has said he is aware of what was happening in Ukraine, and that 'Putin has destroyed all his life's work'.

TAJIKISTAN

The press of Tajikistan emphatically reports that the country's population has reached 10 million, celebrating the birth in Dushanbe of a child declared to be the ten-millionth Tajik. President Emomali Rakhmon presented the baby's parents with a three-room flat.
