South Korea’s chief of security arrives in Pyongyang

Seoul sends five representatives to the north. Dialogue between the two Koreas  continues in an attempt to convince the North to sit down at the negotiating table with Washington and the international community to denuclearise the peninsula.

Seoul (AsiaNews / Agencies) – A South Korean delegation arrived today in North Korea with the goal of persuading Pyongyang to sit down at the negotiating table with the United States and resume dialogue with the international community for the denuclearization of the peninsula.

The journey represents a further step forward in the inter-Korean dialogue, which was rebooted in the context of the Winter Olympics last month. The delegation, made up of five members, left at 2 pm from Seoul, led by Chung Eui-yong, director of the National Security Office. Suh Hoon, head of the National Intelligence Service, is among the four delegates to follow him.

"First of all - said Chung at a press conference before departure - I will deliver President Moon Jae-in's sincere and firm resolution to maintain the dialogue and improvement in relations between the South and the North, which were fostered on the occasion of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula ". Of the same importance, he added, is the resumption of relations between the "North with the United States and the international community".

The return of the South Korean delegation is scheduled for tomorrow. According to the Blue House in Seoul, Chung and Suh will head to Washington to discuss the result of the trip with the American authorities.
