Anticorruption party close to victory in Dehli elections

Exit polls give the Aam Aadmi Party (Aap) of Arwind Kejriwal the lead. Tomorrow the official results. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, Hindu nationalists) minimizes the results of election polls. The turnout was 67.14%.

New Delhi (AsiaNews / Agencies) - While the official results of the Delhi elections will only be released tomorrow, the polls give a clear lead to the "the common man" Arwind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (Aap, anti-corruption). Kiran Bedi, a candidate for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, Hindu nationalists), was unable to win over the heart of the electorate, despite a campaign supported by the party's most important member: all Narendra Modi, Prime Minister India.

According to the Election Commission, with over 13 million registered voters the turnout was of 67.14% in the 70 districts of the state territory of Delhi.

For the moment, the BJP is down playing the exit poll results, which predict a clear majority for the Aap. Yesterday the party leaders called a meeting and expressed "confidence in the possible formation of a government" and speaking of a "head to head" between the two parties. However, if they were to lose, it would be the first major defeat for the prime minister Modi.

The Congress Part, which has governed Delhi for 15 years, seems to be out of the running. Ajay Maken, general secretary of the party, commented on the exit polls: "So, I think people really want to give AAP a chance and if the exit polls, opinion polls are correct, so if that is the case, the will of the people should prevail in a democracy. And, whatever role people decide for us, we are ready to play".

In the last election for the Legislative Assembly of Delhi (December 2013) Arwind Kejriwal and Aap had formed a minority executive with the support of Congress. However, he remained in office only 49 days, resigning in protest against the major parties.

According to some commentators, the new Aap success is due to the charisma of its leader. Kejriwal, noted political analysts, has not only been able to apologize for mistakes made, but has also used it to emphasize the "unique appeal" of his party: " We had consulted you, the people of Delhi, on every decision we had taken till then. Our mistake was in not going back to you before resigning ".
