Speaking in Geneva, Tibet’s spiritual leader stresses the failures of China’s minority policies, cause of misunderstandings and street protests. He insists that economic development is not enough; honesty and moral authority are needed too. He wants to give dialogue another chance.

Beijing expecting more unrest in Tibet
After a year of tight police controls the local economy is in a slump and the population is exasperated. Many ethnic Han Chinese, drawn to the place by promises of good money, are talking about packing it in and leave a land where they are not wanted. The Dalai Lama warns Tibetans to stay calm to avoid further crackdowns.

In Lhasa, Tibetan man sentenced to death for his involvement in 2008 clashes
The Intermediate People’s Court in the Tibetan capital convicts Sonam Tsering for taking part in anti-Chinese demonstrations; five more Tibetans are sentenced to jail terms, ranging from three to five years, for protecting him.

Tibet, a "stain" on the 2008 Olympics in Beijing
A French parliamentary delegation yesterday returned from a visit to the region. A senator warned Beijing about the importance of resolving the Tibetan question before the Games. In the meantime, the Panchen Lama chosen by Communist leaders has returned home.
