Islamic terrorist to attack police stations

In a letter the terrorists warn they'll carry out attacks if the government does not establish Sharia-based Islamic rule.

Dhaka (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Islamic terrorists warned they will blow up police stations unless authorities heed their call for turning Bangladesh into an Islamic state.

The threat was issued in a letter sent to a police station in northern Rajshahi district on Tuesday, according to police officer Nayeem Ahmed.

Signed by Moulana Hafizuddin, a self-proclaimed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen leader, the letter threatened to "blow up all of Bangladesh's police stations" if their demand for Islamic rule was ignored.

"We are not immediately sure if the threat is real or just a hoax . . . but we have not taken it very lightly," Ahmed said.

He added that the police was still trying to track down Hafizuddin, who identified himself in the letter as a resident of another northern district, Chapainawabganj.

Islamic terrorists have launched a wave of bombings across Bangladesh over the past two months.

On Monday, Mizanur Rahman Mukul, a suspected leader of the banned Harkatul Jihad group, was arrested.

The day before, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, had sent another letter to the administrative head of north-eastern Sylhet district, threatening more bomb attacks on government installations.

"More simultaneous attacks will be launched to blow up government installations in the next 15 days," S.M. Faisal Alam, deputy commissioner of Sylhet, said.

The Police hold Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen responsible for exploding some 500 small bombs across the country, almost simultaneously, on Aug. 17, killing two people and wounding about 100.

Leaflets found at bomb sites on August 17 carried a call by the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen for the introduction of Sharia-based Islamic rule in Bangladesh

Two more people died and 15 were hurt when militants hurled five bombs at court buildings in three districts outside Dhaka on October 3.
