Maronite Patriarch: Lebanon needs a president
Fearful of political chaos and critical of those who want a divided Lebanon and are working against the country's unity, Card Beshara Al-Rahi calls for a speedy election. For him, "the Arab Spring will blossom only through Lebanon."
For Patriarch Rahi, parliament should meet every day until it elects a new president
The prelate makes the request to the parliamentary speaker. Some people "are hindering the election, directly or indirectly"; others "are supporting them in and outside the country"; all are doing "serious harm to Lebanon."

Michel Aoun meets with Patriarch Rai, after gaining support of most Lebanese parties
It’s almost certain that Gen. Aoun will be elected new president of Lebanon during the session slated for 31 October. He is supported by Saad Hariri, Hezbollah, the Lebanese Forces. His party has good relations with Christians, Shiites and Sunnis. Jumblatt Druze dubious. Nabih Berri and Amal say no. Surprise silence of Saudi Arabia. The first president to have been "Made in Lebanon".

Maronite bishops: Welcome Aoun and hope for a stable government of Lebanon
At their monthly assembly led by Patriarch Rai, the prelates hailed the election of the head of state after more than a two and a half year vacuum. Praise for Aoun’s oath address and emphasis on "stability." Now the goal is for the "quick" formation of a new government and a new electoral law to guarantee "representativeness."
Lebanon taking advantage of the emerging new regional order
In his inaugural speech the new head of state addresses all burning issues that affect the Lebanese, from the Taif Agreement to citizenship for immigrants, from the weapons of the resistance to the international tribunal, without false promises or any subterfuge.
Constitution cannot be changed to elect president, says Sfeir
During celebrations for Our Lady of Lebanon, Maronite patriarch demands respect for the state’s basic law. He says he is ready to announce a ‘consensus-based’ choice for president if there are guarantees that his choice “is taken into account.” Aoun confirms his candidacy, adds: “I will not support any other person. I will not agree on anyone.”
