Police charge 18,000 workers, Catholics condemn the crackdown
Clashes occurred on Monday when workers were protesting against a draft law that would not guarantee a lifetime retirement pension. Three people are said to have died in the incident. Police used tear gas and prevented wounded from being evacuated to hospitals.

A 'people's court’ to discuss workers' problems
The Dabindu Collective, which is behind the initiative, seeks to protect people working in the Free Trade Zones where workers are forced to work without breaks and endure growing mental and physical problems, whilst women are discriminated, and Tamils are mistreated.

Catholic religious and activists gather once a month in a silent vigil for the victims of police violence
For the past seven months, civil rights group Right to Life has organised a protest to demand an investigation into the clashes that occurred on 30 May 2012 in Katunayake Free Trade Zone. Roshen Chanaka, 21, was killed at the time and eight more young workers were injured. Two are now paralysed. So far, police has failed to investigate the matter.

Garment industry hit hard as plants close and workers are laid off
Hardest hit are young worker and women, who represent 90 per cent of the workforce. The government has no plan to rescue factories or help laid off workers. More closures and layoffs are expected in the so-called Free Trade Zone after 14 April, New Year in the Sinhalese and Tamil calendar.

Sri Lankan Catholic mother wants to know who killed her son
Roshen Shanaka was killed by police in 2011 during a protest against welfare reform. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa set up a special commission of inquiry, but the results of its investigation have never been made public. Relatives of those wounded in police repression want justice and compensation.

Unions demand Colombo cancel pension reform
The government is set to approve the new pension scheme (Private Sector Pension Bill) to obtain loans from the International Monetary Fund. In late May, workers demonstrated against the "misleading" reform. One youth dies in police charge.
