Sri Lanka, "premeditated" death sentence for five Indian fishermen
According to Jesuit priest Santhanam, the judgment issued by the Sri Lankan court is the result of decades of conflict between Delhi and Colombo over trespassing in territorial waters. The verdict "contradicts Pope Francis’ position against the death penalty".

Catholic Church in Orissa helps free 19 Sri Lankan fishermen
24 held for more than two months for having exceeded the limits of territorial waters. Ten freed October 1, nine (five of which are Christians) October 3. Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar: "Look to the future with hope." For the last five prisoners a few more months of waiting.
Supreme Court upholds life sentence for killer of two missionaries
Dara Singh, a Hindu extremist who killed Fr Arul Doss and Christian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons, had applied for release on bail. His request was rejected on both accounts and so he will purge his entire sentence.
Murderer of a missionary in Orissa gets milder sentence
The Catholic and Protestant churches express consternation about a sentence handed down by the High Court which diminishes the legal responsibility of a Hindu group guilty of the murder of an Australian missionary and his two children.

Indian activist: The Pope's words on the death penalty and life in prison, a stimulus for reform
Arun Ferreira spent four years in prison on false charges: he was tortured and learned about the terrible reality of the judicial system. He tells AsiaNews: "Francis powerfully told the truth, making it clear that life imprisonment is a death sentence in disguise. Hopefully his words will give strength to the Indian Church, which must address the issue of reform of the judicial system."

Minister of Fisheries accused of ignoring fate of fishermen imprisoned in India
For months, he has avoided meeting with the families of detainees. When we met them he made fun of the women, making it clear he does not want to be involved and refuses to talk with national leaders of fishermen's organizations.
