Congress rejects latest attempt to impeach Arroyo

Manila (AsiaNews/Agencies) – The attempt to impeach Filipino President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Gloria Arroyo has failed once and for all. Opposition politicians have conceded defeat after losing the latest vote in Congress on the third complaint filed by lawyer Oliver Lozano against the President for alleged corruption during last year's election. The leader of the anti-Arroyo campaign vowed however to continue the fight in the courts and the streets.

Former President Corazon Aquino—who came to power in 1986 on the wave of a popular revolt against then dictator Ferdinando Marcos—said that she will join demonstrators in a rally against Arroyo in front of the Congress building.

So far demonstrations organised by the opposition have failed to draw great crowds. In the last two rallies to support the impeachment proceedings only a thousand people showed up.
