Dhaka, towards Easter by reflecting on "sacrifice, service and spiritual growth"

by William Gomes
In the church of the Holy Cross, a parish in the capital, over 120 children have prayed and meditated on the themes of "sacrifice, service and growth in spiritual life." A seminar in the Lenten season to "welcome and celebrate the risen Christ." Local priests: the children learn the value of the free gift of self.
Dhaka (AsiaNews) - In the church of the Holy Cross, archdiocese of Dhaka, more than 120 young Catholics gathered for a prayer meeting and meditation during the Lenten season. The seminar was held yesterday in a room of the parish and focused on the themes of "sacrifice, service and growth in spiritual life." Shawon Purification among the promoters of the meeting, told AsiaNews that "it was a very important seminar" to deepen the "meaning of the Cross" and share the experience of death and resurrection of Jesus

The young Bangladeshi Catholic stresses that the Way of the Cross is the privileged experience to "feel the suffering endured by Christ," the sacrifice of his passion and death on the cross. "At that moment - he adds - the famous movie 'The Passion of the Christ' by Mel Gibson comes to mind and the experience of the Cross is a reminder that Jesus died for me."

However, the experience of death is overcome by the resurrection on Easter Sunday. "The sadness - comments the young Catholic - is overcome by the knowledge that comes the time when Jesus rose from the dead." For this, he concludes, "in this Lenten season we prepare to welcome Jesus and celebrate the risen Christ at Easter."

Fr. Edmond Cruze, a priest of the church of Holy Cross, explains that "there are over 400 young people in the parish and they are very active." The idea for yesterday was their initiative; they have raised the funds, out of pocket money. "The young people – he stresses - are learning to give." The seminar is also an opportunity to "deepen their faith and understand the meaning of the Passion of Christ to the world today."    Among the participants of the meeting was Mrinal Kanti Michel Baro, who "offered the Mass" in thanksgiving for having escaped, March 19, 2008, a terrible car accident. His wife was seriously injured but by faith in Jesus and "the help of the Virgin Mary," they were saved. Both have recovered and are "now we are preparing with a stronger faith to live more firmly the resurrection of Christ."
