Dozens die in floods in central Vietnam
Hanoi (AsiaNews) – Over 60 people have died and hundreds more are missing in the aftermath of floods which have been causing havoc in Vietnam since late October, provoked by torrential rains and typhoons which have hit above all the central regions of the country.
NVA, the National information agency reports that tens of thousands of homes have been washed away, 50 thousand in 70 villages in one province alone Quang Ngai. The Dong Xuan, Tuy An and Son Hoa districts of the high planes have been completely cut off. In Tay Nguyen region between 70 and 120 millimetres of rain have fallen, while typhoon Peipah, is due to make landfall in the next 24 hours.
The situation is also rendering emergency relief operations difficult: 160 thousand people have been evacuated, but many other situations remain drastic: in Tay Hoa, 23 workers in a hydroelectric plant are completely isolated.
The rains have swollen rivers: Dinh River is 1.12m higher than the third alarm level, while water levels in reservoirs have also rapidly risen. The Da Ban, Cam Ranh, Suoi Dau and Lang Nhot Ea Krong Rou reservoirs have opened their flood discharge gates.
