Goa, murderers of fr. Ferrao arrested

Culprits are two men from Uttar Pradesh: one "was a friend of fr. Ferrao". Still unknown the motives.

Goa (AsiaNews/Cbci) - Two men, alleged to be involved in the murder of Goan priest Fr. Eusebio Ferrao were arrested in Nagpur on March 21st, 2006. Following leads, the Goa police had despatched a team to Nagpur to nab Amit Shukla and Manish Dubey. Both the accused belong to Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Following interrogation by the police the two accused confessed to the crime and claimed that Fr. Ferrao was friendly with Amit and even promised him a better job. Amit had also visited Fr. Ferrao a few times in connection with the job.

On the night of the March 17th, the duo went to Fr. Ferrao. He apparently them dinner. Since it was late and the duo had no transport to return, Fr. Ferrao allowed them to sleep in an adjoining room. Later in the night, Fr. Ferrao went to their room to find out if they were fine. At that time the duo jumped on him and strangled him to death. The police say that the duo did it under the influence of liquor.

After that they hitched a ride to Margao from where they boarded a train to Kalyan. The post mortem report says that Fr. Ferrao died of violent asphyxia and enumerates 27 stab wounds on the body.

The funeral of Fr. Ferrao was held on March 21 at his native village of Chinchinim, in South Goa. Over 8,000 people attended the funeral.
