by Thanh Thuy

Initiatives aimed at teaching the doctrine and values of the Church have been undertaken in the Archdiocese of Hanoi. On 8 August, representatives of local churches and districts took part in a "catechism competition" in Canh Hoạch parish. Seven days before, 400 youths came together for a congress to mark the 11th anniversary of the youth association. Meetings were also held in Phủ Lý-Kim Bảng and Duy Tiên.

Hanoi (AsiaNews) – Catechism is an "indispensable tool for children to maintain and express their faith, in a society humiliated by the lack of educational policies and ethnic integration,” this according to the cardinals, bishops and priests of northern Vietnam.

This part of the country has been under Communist ideological control for almost 90 years. In the past few decades, consumerism and greed have compounded the problems of materialism and atheism. All these ingredients have produced crime, family breakdown, and violence in society.

The focus is on young Catholics. In the Archdiocese of Hanoi, certain initiatives have been undertaken to teach the doctrine and values of the Church.

On Palm Sunday (25 March), 30,000 people from every parish of the archdiocese took part in a Youth Congress, centred on "As the Father has sent me, so I send you" (Jn 20:21).

Card Peter Nguyễn Văn Nhơn, archbishop of Hanoi, presided over the event that boosted the bond and communion among youths.

On 8 August, a "competition" organised by the Committee for the Catechism of the Archdiocese of Hanoi was held Canh Hoạch parish.

Local churches and districts were represented in a competition after participants were selected through a quiz contest (hái hoa dân chủ) at the end of a period of study that took place in each parish starting at Lent.

On the occasion of the feast day of Saint Alphonsus (1 August) and the 11th anniversary of the youth association, Canh Hoạch parish saw 400 young people take part in a congress, coming mostly from the parishes of Phương Trung, Canh Hoạch, Thạch Bích, Cao Bộ, Thượng Lao, Đàn Giản, and Tân Hội.

Fr John Baptiste Vũ Văn Tín, who was one of the conference participants, presented his analysis on the "difficulties encountered in a life of faith". Later, he led some youth groups in pastoral outreach aimed at "strengthening the faith of youth in the love of God".

In order to boost the spirit of union among young people in the PhủLý-Kim Bảng area, about 500 young people from the 13 local parishes took part on 22 July in celebrations to honour of Saint Lawrence of Brindisi, on the theme of "You are my witness ".

Six days later, 400 young people from the Duy Tiên area contributed to the celebrations for the 11th anniversary of the dedication of Yên Mỹ parish (Lý Nhân District) to the blessed Anrê Phú Yên (Andrew of Phú Yên), a catechist and a Vietnamese martyr.

Fr Francis Lê Thanh Nghị, district manager, offered his testimony in a meeting with the youth on the topic of “Love returns love” (Tình Yêu Đáp Trả Tình Yêu).
