Kandahar suicide bomb at a wedding: over 40 dead

At least 77 injured. The explosion occurred in the area reserved to men. Many of them are policemen or members of local militias fighting the Taliban.

Kandahar (AsiaNews / Agencies) - A suicide attack during a wedding party has killed at least 40 people, injuring 77. The attack took place yesterday evening in the Arghandab district, north of Kandahar, an area infested with Taliban and where for months foreign troops have been trying to fight them.

Police sreport that many of the wedding guests were local policemen or members of local militias who fought against the Taliban. The explosion occurred in the section reserved for men.

Initially, the guests had thought they were victims of a raid by multinational forces. Today the government in Kabul confirmed the attack was a suicide bombing.

In the war that has plagued Afghanistan since 2001, thousands of civilians have died because of violence and Taliban attacks. But the soldiers of the multinational force have also killed hundreds of civilians, either mistaking them for insurgents or errors made in air raid attacks.
