Just over 7 million Cambodians, 89.52% of registered voters, voted in the municipal council elections, a record in what analysts point to as a significant test before the general election of 2018.
Preliminary results released by political parties indicate that little more than 51% of popular vote went to Prime Minister Hun Sen's CPP, while about 46% to Kem Sokha's CNRP. The CPP won 1163 of the 1646 communal councils, while CNRP won 482. A seat finally went to the Khmer National United Party, one of the ten other small parties that participated in the vote on June 4.
The National Election Commission (NEC) said the final official results will not be announced until June 25, but preliminary results will be published between June 11 and 12 next.
The 14-day electoral campaign, which began on May 20, took place with relative calm, but was marked by the frequent warnings from Hun Sen. The chief of the executive, in government for almost 32 years, had warned that an Opposition victory in the just-concluded elections would have thrown Cambodia into chaos, instability and war.
