New online edition of the Bible in Sinhalese

by Melani Manel Perera
The Ceylon Bible Society (CBS) has launched a new website with an updated version of the Sacred Scriptures. The ecumenical organization takes up Benedict XVI’s invitation to focus on new digital technologies for evangelization.

Colombo (AsiaNews) - A new website and an updated version of the Bible in Sinhalese, available online to all Sri Lankans around the world. It is the response of the Ceylon Bible Society (CBS), an ecumenical Christian organization, to the theme chosen by Benedict XVI for the next World Day of Social Communications, dedicated to "Social Networks: portals of truth and faith, new spaces of evangelization."

The launch of the new platform took place on December 10 last at the Bible House Auditorium in Colombo. Fr. Henry Silva, a Catholic priest and president of the translations, presented the site, calling it "an opportunity for all Sri Lankans to read the Bible wherever they are." "With this initiative - said Lakshani Fernando, Secretary General of the CBS - we hope to bring people closer to God, day after day."

Founded in 1812 in the heart of British colonialism, CBS is one of the oldest associations of Sri Lanka. It takes care of translating, publishing and distributing the Bible in the island. In 2012, the organization marked 200 years of activity. For the occasion, it launched an ambitious project: deliver 10 thousand Bibles in Sinhalese and Tamil, throughout the state.
