Pope in favour of Seoul’s reconciliation initiatives

In receiving South Korea’s new ambassador to the Vatican, Benedict XVI praised his country’s peace initiatives and support for those who are suffering as a result of the peninsula’s division. The Holy Father calls on the scientific community to tackle the ethical issues that its research entails; he reiterates the Church’s opposition to violating the respect due to life.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – In meeting today the new South Korean Ambassador Ji-Young Francis Kim, who was received in the Vatican for the presentation of his Letters of credence, Benedict XVI expressed the support of the Holy See to South Korea’s aspirations and initiatives in favour of reconciliation on the Korean peninsula and its help for those who are suffering.

In his address the Pope praised the country’s international initiatives in favour of pace and its scientific endeavours, whilst reiterating the Church’s opposition to research that entails the destruction of embryos and the violation of respect that is due to life. Research, he said, must always meet strong and rigorous ethical principles that are shared by all.

“I take this opportunity,” Benedict XVI said, “to reiterate the Holy See’s support for every initiative that aims at a sincere and lasting reconciliation, putting an end to enmity and unresolved grievances.”

I commend your country’s efforts to foster fruitful and open dialogue while simultaneously working to alleviate the pain of those suffering from the wounds of division and distrust.”

With an implicit reference to North Korea, the Pope expressed his “ardent hope that the ongoing participation of various countries involved in the negotiation process will lead to a cessation of programmes designed to develop and produce weapons with frightening potential for unspeakable destruction.
