Pope: “May Divine Wisdom enlighten the consciences of those in authority towards a just and lasting peace”
Today, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, during the Angelus, Leo XIV recalled the ‘united invocation for peace’ from the recitation of the Rosary during the Marian month, which is now drawing to a close. He remembered the “peoples tormented by war”; the “gift of peace” was also implored yesterday from the Vatican Gardens. The commentary on the Gospel: “The Trinity makes us love everything and everyone”
Vatican City (AsiaNews) - “A collective prayer for peace” rose from the “unbroken chain” of the Holy Rosary recited by the whole Church during the Marian month of May, which is drawing to a close. Pope Leo XIV recalled this today, Sunday 31 May, the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, from the window of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, after the recitation of the Angelus, before some 20,000 people gathered in St Peter’s Square.
Yesterday, the Pope led prayers in the Lourdes Grotto in the Vatican Gardens to mark the end of May, with 2,000 people present, linked via video link to 200 Marian shrines. Last night he had asked for “the gift of peace”; today he recalled “the peoples tormented by war”. “May divine Wisdom enlighten the consciences of those in authority and guide their decisions towards a sincere search for a just and lasting peace,” he said.
After the Angelus, the Pope also recalled the 25th Day of Relief, which is observed today in Italy. “I am close to the sick and to those who care for them; I thank and encourage all those who promote a culture of closeness and care,” Pope Prevost added this morning.
Before reciting the Marian prayer, Leo XIV commented on the Gospel of the day (Jn 3:16-18). He noted that by celebrating the “Mystery of the Triune God” today, we are offered the chance to “rethink the path we have travelled”, starting from its “centre”, namely “the life of God who gave himself to us in Jesus Christ”. A life that “is a dynamic, inexhaustible, fruitful communion, which now involves us”, said Prevost.
Speaking of Nicodemus, featured in the Word of the Day, he emphasised that “by welcoming him, the Lord gave importance to his search. He surprised him, suggesting that even an adult can be born again; he let him sense that the life of God could transform his life. Jesus spoke to Nicodemus of the Holy Spirit, illuminating his night with the truth that, on today’s feast, resounds in all our churches.”
The Pope added that it is possible to find a “home” in the Mystery of God, just as it happened to Nicodemus. “The Trinity makes us love everything and everyone: we discover that every creature is made for communion, relationship, encounter,” said Pope Leo XIV today. He then added: “By contrast, we understand why divisions, polarisation and contempt for diversity bring destruction, sadness and barrenness into the world.”
Like Nicodemus, every person can receive from God the “Spirit of communion, which opens the heart to new truth and true newness”. After today’s Angelus, the Pope said: “Those who do not welcome this Spirit grow old quickly, in lamentation; they find themselves alone, their spirits never in celebration. Today, however, dear brothers and sisters, is a day of celebration! God’s feast is our feast.”
