Running for solidarity in the Archdiocese of Jakarta

by Mathias Hariyadi

This year’s RUN4U, which was held online due to the pandemic, raised 3.8 billion rupiahs for projects dedicated to people with disabilities, education and health. Cardinal Suharyo also joined in running on his treadmill.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – The pandemic that has again afflicted Indonesia this autumn has not stopped RUN4U, a sporting fundraiser that began in 2018.

The Catholic Professional and Business Association[*] and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Diocesan Service Agency[†], which are associated with the Archdiocese of Jakarta, are behind this initiative of solidarity.

The 2021 edition began last August, but only in virtual form. Instead of taking part in group sporting activities to raise funds, each participant was invited to carry out a sporting activity on their own, like running, walking or cycling.

The result was amazing. At the end of the campaign, 3.8 billion Indonesian rupiahs (about US$ 265,000) were raised, which will support eight projects (schools, aid to the disabled, and a COVID-19 centre).

“Dozens of priests, nuns and other religious joined the virtual event, helping us collect a large number of offerings,” said Patricia Rusli, the initiative’s coordinator, speaking to AsiaNews.

Archbishop Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo of Jakarta, also participated by running on his treadmill.

The Sinar Pelangi Foundation in Bekasi (West Java province), which helps orphans and special needs children, is one the recipients of funding.

“We greatly appreciate this campaign,” said the foundation’s supervisor, Dutch-born Sister Andre Lemmers, from the Franciscan Congregation of the Heart of Jesus and Mary

RUN4U “has motivated hundreds of people to join in this humanitarian initiative, not only by promoting a healthier lifestyle, but also by helping people show their compassion for others.”
