Taiwan, conversion becomes mission even in the media

by Xin Yage
Dean Ferng received baptism last Christmas, after drawing near to the Catholic faith by the witness of Christians he met in his life: "They have a goal, a vision, they know where they want to go." He is now working to introduce the Pope more thanks to two documentaries, which will be aired on national television.

Taipei (AsiaNews) - The decision to become a Catholic "came from the witness of Christians that I saw around me. Their personalities revealed a goal in their lives, they had a vision, they knew where they wanted to go in their lives. And then they were enthusiastic, they serve with generosity, they don't limit themselves". This how Dean Ferng (馮益峰) describes his recent conversion and baptism to AsiaNews.

"I was baptized last year - he says - on Christmas day. Why did I  ask to be baptized? It's simple: I saw the commitment of the sisters and the other missionaries in helping others and in announcing the faith. When I was at university I met several nuns and a priest who taught English. Especially Sister Rose Michel Boudreau, a Sister of Providence, helped me a lot. "

"When I read the Gospel - he adds - I feel deeply touched. Especially the passage about being salt of the earth and light of the world. The Christians that I knew were not hidden, but they were for us students, at that time, explicit reference points ".

The missionaries met on the way, "taught me languages such as English and German in which I became very fluent, and they allowed me to work in the United States and Germany. But above all they taught me to use my talents and my knowledge with humility to further mission. I found an active mission (很 積極 的 使命) that allows me to build on the values that I learned".

During these months, "I am beginning to understand how to combine the Gospel and educational tradition Taiwanese (與 鄰 為 善) more consistently which in itself already is concerned about the condition of others. My story unfolded in the education of children, especially disadvantaged children, from whom I have received so much. Then there was the transition to the world of media and television, where probably no one sees you if you work behind the scenes, but thanks to which you can reach an unexpected number of people".

And in Lent this step becomes an opportunity for evangelization: "We are collecting money to raise awareness about the Pope among Taiwanese people. Saturday, March 21 a documentary that presents the life of Pope Francis will be released in China on national television. We bought it from the Vatican and we immediately recorded the narration in Mandarin".

Moreover, with the support of the Archbishop of Taipei John Hung Shan-chuan (洪山川 總 主教), "we are preparing a new program again about Pope Francis, to use the Taiwanese language and culture and make it more familiar to everyone. We have already found most of the funds and in May we will have a dinner to raise money and launch of the advertising campaign. This is a collaboration between the archdiocese, missionary foundations, national television and Kuangchi Program Service (光啓 社).  Archbishop Hung has given us his unconditional support".

Hopefully, Dean concludes, "through the efforts of the entire Catholic community of Taiwan the message of Jesus can be spread and made known to more people. What is my dream for this Easter? Besides seeing the people around me happy, especially those who are suffering now ... I hope to receive a gift of a chocolate bunny like they do in Germany".
