Talks among six nations called a "success"

Beijing (AsiaNews) – Talks among 6 major world nations, meeting to discuss putting a stop to the escalating North Korean nuclear program crisis, have come to a close and have been called a "success" by participating members.

While the summit still has not produced any common statement among the six nations represented at the meetings, Chinese representatives are working an a draft to be accepted by all.

However there are still substantial differences to be worked out between Washington and Pyongyang. The Americans are seeking a complete dismantling of the North Korean nuclear program, while the North Korean government will only agree to halting developing of their program while increasing their requests for aid and security.

The summit was termed a "success" due to the fact that all 6 countries had not been able to meet since last August and have agreed to create a working group to peacefully resolve the problem. The next meetings are scheduled to take place in Beijing.

China, a friend of North Korea for decades, used every diplomatic effort to make the meeting possible. More than 60 bilateral and multilateral consultations with the United States, North Korea, South Korea, Japan and Russia took place during the first and second rounds of discussions at the summit's meetings.
