Šarikoni Milli: Businesses unite for Tajikistan’s economy

by Vladimir Rozanskij

Several of the country’s major business groups have formed a network to promote the idea that collaboration is more productive than competition, and they are now working together to find common paths to strengthen the national economy. Their efforts begin with social projects such as supporting low-income families, schools, and student hostels.

Dushanbe (AsiaNews) – The business world across the globe often resembles a ruthless jungle, with groups forming closed castes, defending themselves against any outside influence, and fiercely competing for market dominance. An alternative path is now being pioneered in Tajikistan by the Šarikoni Milli club – a calm and open community that seeks to demonstrate a new kind of economy, rich in human values.

In November 2023, during an informal meeting, representatives from some of Tajikistan’s leading companies decided to join forces not only to increase profits but to build the future. Thus, a new business club was born – the only platform in the country where entrepreneurs stay in constant contact, exchanging views and experiences and working on joint projects that go beyond the interests of individual firms.

Among the key supporters are representatives of FiftyFive Group (a local holding operating in catering, fashion, tourism, and finance), the Oryo petrol station network, as well as Tcell and Bima. The initial drive came from Eradj Yusufshoev, Commercial Director of FiftyFive, who was elected president of Šarikoni Milli. The club currently brings together 14 companies across a range of sectors, from retail and construction to insurance and telecommunications.

The core principle is simple: collaboration is more productive than competition, with the aim of strengthening the national economy as a whole. As Yusufshoev explains, “It all comes down to practical utility: we want to build an ecosystem where mutual support is the norm, and everyone benefits in the long term – the markets, society, and the state.” The forms of cooperation vary widely, from joint commercial ventures and product launches to training programmes, charitable initiatives, and a unified discount system for employees of member companies.

Members meet at forums, business breakfasts, and strategic sessions, attracting experts and exploring advanced digital solutions to keep pace with economic change. In 2024, the club hosted a major forum on transport and logistics – one of the most urgent needs for the national economy – bringing together over 70 top managers from across the country. This May, the “Innovation Forum” took place, focusing on automation and cutting-edge technological solutions. The club’s calendar also includes sports tournaments, environmental actions, and welfare projects, creating an increasingly dynamic agenda for all its members.

Social projects play a significant role, including support for low-income families, schools, and hostels – initiatives that have already benefited over a thousand families and many social workers. Yusufshoev proudly declares, “Sustainable and lasting development begins with respecting people, because business should not only concern shareholders, but society as a whole.” Šarikoni Milli aspires to be a “community of genuine and deep values”, cultivating mutual trust and effective partnerships with “a strong sense of responsibility”, aiming to create a culture of collective commitment – especially among the younger generations – and new employment opportunities.

The club’s future plans are ambitious, aiming to expand the network and involve as many businesses as possible, while proposing initiatives at a national level. Government bodies are supportive of these prospects, but bureaucratic delays and the authoritarian political environment typical of Tajikistan and other Central Asian countries hinder the swift and effective integration envisaged by the “new entrepreneurs” of Šarikoni Milli.
