East Java: three militants arrested on returning from Syria. They were "disappointed by the Islamic State"

After six months in Syria, three militants have returned home disillusioned: they did not find the riches they expected in Syria. To counter the increasing numbers of citizens who join the Islamic State, the Minister of the Interior plans to revoke the citizenship of those who leave.

Jakarta (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Two days ago the Indonesian police in East Java arrested three men, militiamen of the Islamic State (IS). They were returning home, after fighting in Syria, "because they were disappointed."

Those arrested Ahmad Junaedi, Helmi Alamudi Muhammad and Abdul Hakim Munabari. "had traveled to Syria along with Salim Mubarok Attamimi, also known as Abu Jandal alYemeni al Indonesi," said Anas Yosuf, chief inspector.

Abu Jandal is one of the best-known IS followers in Indonesia, having also appeared in several videos in which he threatens the Indonesian army and some Muslim organizations, accused of heresy.

How the three arrested were able to go to Syria and then to make it back remains a mystery. One of them, Juanedi, is alleged to have spent at least six months in Syria, fighting for the Islamic caliphate.

As reported by the authorities, the return of the three militiamen is due to their discontent over broken promises. Recruited through propaganda campaigns in which they were promised high wages, women and honors, the three Indonesians were ultimately disappointed: "Junaedi did not find anything in Syria and noticed that the recruiters had lied. These are the first results of our investigation, "said the head of the national counterterrorism Denus 88 team.

According to government estimates, since the beginning of the year 159 Indonesians have joined the Islamic State. Of them, 11 have died in Syria, while another 11 were repatriated.

Interior minister Tjahjo Kumolo, is considering the revocation of Indonesian citizenship from nationals who join extremist military groups, in order to discourage and prevent them: "We have to think about this option very carefully, however, because we have an obligation to protect our citizens abroad unless it is completely clear [that have joined the IS].
