Bihar, Maoist attack: government buildings and railways destroyed

The rebel’s reaction comes on the heels of the wave of arrests of their leaders, resulting in over 100 detained. Over the course of the 40 year Maoist rebellion, thousands have died: for the government they represent the greatest threat to national security.

Patna (AsiaNews/Agencies) – A group of Maoist terrorists last night destroyed three government buildings in the eastern state of Bihar as well as some tracts of the railway.  State police confirmed the attack, describing it as “revenge” for a series of arrests of rebel leaders last month.

Vinay Kumar, a senior police officer said from Jamui district, where the incident took place says: “We have dispatched forces to provide security to people and the railway workers who are restoring the damaged lines”.  No one was injured, he added.

Lokesh Kumar Singh, a government official said from Munger district, said: “We are conducting raids and investigations to discover the dynamics of the attacks. The rebels have fled the zone, and we fear they may have outside ties in India”.

The attacks took place one day after heavy clashes between police and rebels, which took place in the surrounding countryside, in which many Maoist rebels were killed.  Last month the government arrested at least 100 rebel leaders, accused of terrorism and sedition.

The rebels, who have been fighting a 40 year war, accuse the Indian Union of exploiting Bihar farmers and claim to “want to free them from State imposed slavery”.  Thousands have perished in the war.  According to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, however, the Maoist rebels “are the greatest threat to Indian national security”.
