Pope continues to worsen

Cardinal Ruini: "I thank God for having given us this man".

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - The Pope's health continues to worsen according to a statement released by Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls today at 6:30 p.m. local time.

During the Eucharistic celebration just completed at the Basilica of St John Lateran, the Pope's vicar for the Diocese of Rome, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, recalled "the strong and bounteous faith" of the Pope, "Servant of God". "Immense is our gratitude toward the man Karol Woytjla", Ruini said, "and towards God for giving him to us".

Here is the complete text of Navarro's statement:

The general conditions and cardio-respiratory conditions of the Holy Father have further worsened.

A gradual worsening of arterial hypotension has been noted, and breathing has become shallow. The clinical picture indicates cardio-circulatory and renal insufficiency. The vital signs are notably compromised. The Holy Father - with visible participation - is joining in the continual prayers of those assisting him.
