Pyongyang warns Seoul and Washington of total destruction

North Korea's envoy to the UN attacks South Korea, threatening to destroy it for bad behaviour. A North Korean website releases a video of US troops, president, burning.

Seoul (AsiaNews/Agencies) - North Korea warned South Korea that it might take "second and third steps" after a nuclear test last week.

"We have never recognised the propagandist resolutions on sanctions by the UN Security Council," North Korean envoy Jon Yong Ryong told a session of the UN Conference on Disarmament. "As the saying goes, a new-born puppy knows no fear of a tiger. South Korea's erratic behaviour would only herald its final destruction," he added.

A few days ago, European Union foreign ministers and the United Nations have approved a new series of sanctions against North Korea in response to its nuclear test of 12 February.

However, this has had little apparent effect on the North Korean regime. Activities around the Punggye-ri nuclear site have in fact intensified ahead of another underground nuclear test.

Pyongyang has also increased its anti-US rhetoric. North Korean website Uriminzokkiri has released a video clip to celebrate the recent third nuclear test showing a US city going up in smoke along with US troops and President Barack Obama.

"It is not incorrect to say that the United States' gangster-like policy of hostility prompted us to become a most strong military power," says the text that scrolls across the screen. "Thus it can be said that it was 'thanks to' the Americans that we conducted a nuclear test."

The video, also shown on NK NEWS, ends with an animated simulation of the 12 February underground test.
