UN: never since 2005 so many deaths in Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Today's headlines: India awaits it's rover landing on the Moon; In Cambodia, Hun Manet officially named prime minister; Eight people, mostly children, rescued from stranded cable car in northern Pakistan; Documents show the Vatican's role in the repatriation of Japanese citizens at the end of World War II; Several foreign medicines will no longer be accessible in Russia.

ISRAEL - PALESTINE
In 2023, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict killed more than 200 Palestinians and almost 30 Israelis, already surpassing the victims of 2022 and becoming the highest number since 2005. Tor Wennesland, UN envoy for the Middle East, links the increase in violence to desperation for the future: settlements and demolitions weigh on the Israeli front, militant activity on the Palestinian one.

INDIA
India is preparing to witness the second moon landing attempt, a crucial mission for space development and just days away from a similar (failed) Russian attempt. The Chandrayaan-3 of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will attempt a landing on the southern side at 18:04 local time. If the company succeeds, Delhi will become the fourth nation to bring its own vehicle to the moon.

CAMBODIA
Parliament has nominated Hun Manet, 45-year-old son of the historic prime minister Hun Sen, as the new head of government, effectively inaugurating the second generation in power. His father, 71 years old and at the helm of the country since 1985, will hold the position of president of the Senate and of the Supreme Privy Council of King Norodom Sihamoni. In his speech, the new prime minister attacked the opposition and dissidents.

KOREA
Seoul today held the first nationwide air defense exercises in six years, in response to Pyongyang's growing nuclear and missile threats. Pedestrians are required to take cover and the circulation of vehicles will be interrupted in some areas. In the regions bordering the North, further scenarios are envisaged, including chemical, biological, radiological training and the use of gas masks.

PAKISTAN
The terrible adventure of a group of eight people, including seven children, remained suspended for a long time after the cable car they were on got stuck above a ravine in the mountainous area of Battagram, in the north of the country . The military speak of a "single rescue operation" due to difficulties and lasting over 15 hours, concluded in the middle of the night.

VATICAN - JAPAN
Newly discovered documents show that the Vatican played an active role in the repatriation of Japanese POWs after World War II. In August 1947, the apostolic nuncio sent a communication to the secretary of state urging the United States to encourage the return. In December of that year, a family group in Japan wrote to the Vatican thanking them for their help. The documents were found in the archives of the University of Tokyo, where they were examined by a professor of international history.

RUSSIA
According to the Kholod agency, there are 197 foreign medicines that will soon no longer be accessible to Russians, as stated in the circular sent by the Moscow health ministry to all medical institutions. Among these various antibiotics, preparations for AIDS, oncological diseases, epilepsy, Parkinson's and psychic diseases, but also simpler drugs with Russian analogues considered to be ineffective.

KAZAKHSTAN - VIETNAM
Kazakhstan President Kasym-Žomart Tokaev visited Hanoi, where he held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart, Vo Van Thuong. At the center of the talks is the strengthening of economic cooperation between the two countries, which last year exceeded the sum of half a billion dollars, and in the first half of 2023 it is already over 600 million.
