White smoke signals new Pope

Vatican (AsiaNews) – Plumes of white smoke rose from the chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel around 6 pm today announcing to the world and to the city of Rome the election of the new Pontiff of the Catholic Church.

Five minutes later the bells of St Peter's Basilica started ringing eliminating any lingering doubts about the smoke's colour.
