A celebration for Charles de Foucauld

by Theresea Kim Hwa-yung

Korean bishop, Peter Kang U, invited the faithful to follow Foucauld's example:"His experience among Muslims and the poor of the Sahara opened a new way of universal brotherhood for us."

Seoul (AsiaNews) – The Korean Church has joined in the universal joy which greeted the beatification of Charles de Foucauld. The Korean bishop, Peter Kang U, concelebrated mass with Fr Vincent Corpet of the Little Brothers of Jesus and Fr Peter Mesini. During the homily, the bishop talked about Foucauld's life from the cradle to the grave and upheld his life as an exemplary model.

He said: "Fr de Foucould found and lived the truth of the mystery of Incarnation of Jesus of Nazareth and imitated him to the death. Captured by Jesus, he spent all his life contemplating him and imitating him. His life was centered on the Eucharist and the Gospel. Through his beatification, the Church has given us a model of Christian perfection and invites us to follow the message of universal brotherhood which de Foucauld experienced in the Sahara. His experience among Muslims and the poor of the Sahara opened a new way of universal brotherhood for us."

There are five spiritual families of de Foucauld in Korea: the Little Brothers of Jesus, the Little Sisters of Jesus, the Fraternity Caritas, the Priests' Jesus Caritas and the Secular Fraternity. The Little Sisters of Jesus marked the 50th anniversary of their arrival in Korea this year. There were around 100 members of these five spiritual families present at the celebration.

The spiritual memoirs of Charles de Foucauld have been translated into Korea; many related books have also been translated and published.
