Pope says peace and dialog are possible in Iraq and Holy Land with UN support

Vatican City (AsiaNews) –  The populations of Iraq and the Holy Land can find paths to reconciliation, peace and dialog with the support of the United Nations. This is what the pope urged faithful to pray for at the end of his general Wednesday audience while greeting Italian pilgrims in St. Peter's Square today.

"To all those here today I once again extend my invitation to pray for world peace, especially in Iraq and the Middle East. With the support of international community these dear nations can make definite steps on the road to reconciliation, dialog and cooperation," the pope said.

John Paul II's invitation to pray for peace in the Middle East is being followed by traditionally discrete Vatican diplomatic action, as Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo, the pope's foreign minister, is conducting an official visit in Great Britain while meeting up with various political and religious exponents.

Lajolo's visit comes just a few weeks prior to US president George W. Bush's June 4 scheduled audience with the pope.
